Supporting a brother and sister to get the help they need

Through previous support accessed through our information and signposting service, a local support organisation, Pallion Action Group, contacted us to explain that they were currently supporting two siblings with learning disabilities.  After the death of a loved one, they were now living independently and were struggling to access the finances and support they needed.

Although there was support in place to help with rehousing them, their current home was in ill repair, and they were struggling to get the repairs required completed.  One of the siblings now had the responsibility of looking after the financial affairs, bills, and general living costs as the other was unable to access their own finances due to financial safeguarding being in place.  The pair were now running into financial difficulties, and they were in danger of not being able to secure a new home due to rent arrears.

A worker from Pallion Action Group contacted us and said;

“Is there anyone you know who can help coordinate the Financial Safeguarding Team with the social worker to move this forward so that their basic housing and financial needs are secure.  I am concerned that their situation needs action urgently and if it is not resolved their future housing needs will not be secure.”

Using our contacts in social care we were able to highlight the issues the siblings were experiencing and the impact this was having on their wellbeing and future housing opportunities with the appropriate professionals.

What difference did this make?

Through our work the siblings now have access to the finances they need to support them to remain independent and living safely in a community they know and are settled in.  Their current home is going to undergo repairs while they are looking forward to life in a new home, which better suits their needs.

The worker from Pallion Action Group has the peace of mind that her clients have the support they need and the appropriate services involved to enable them to live independent lives with financial security.  She said;

 “Thank you for your help and intervention with XX and XX. Prior to this we were going round in circles and getting nowhere!

They are now able to view a property, the financial issues have been resolved and trades have been booked to carry out decoration/repairs.”
