Urostomy Stoma care support

Supporting a patient to get the medical support he needed at the right time

When engaging with members of the public in the new City Hall, we met Matty who had been struggling with his Urostomy over the past few months.  This resulted in 2 visits to the Emergency Department at Sunderland Royal Hospital and a visit to see his GP.  None of the professionals he had spoken to were able to get him in touch with the specialist nurse who could give him the ongoing advice and support he needed.

After some research our Engagement Team were able to locate the correct nurse and share Matty's details with her.  She advised that she would contact him as soon as possible, which she did.

What difference did this make?

Matty now has the appropriate support he needs, for both now and in the future, which will prevent him from having to make future trips to the Emergency Department and to his GP.  This will free up health professionals’ time to see others who need their attention, while Matty can access timely support to the specialist care he needs.

Matty said;

“Thank you so much for your support to find the specialist nurse I need to support me in the community.  It has made a real difference, not only to my health, but also to my wellbeing.  It has given me the piece of mind I need to remain independent.”
