Plans announced for a new Eye Hospital
South Tynside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust have released exciting plans for Sunderland Eye Infirmary and their intention to build an iconic new Eye Hospital in the centre of Sunderland.
As many of you will know, the current building on Queen Alexandra Road is now over 75 years old. Despite the outstanding care and treatment taking place inside, the environment is no longer fit for purpose and does not provide the best experience for patients or staff.
Building a brand new facility has been part of our strategic plans for a long time and has now been made possible thanks to partnership working with Sunderland City Council. This will allow the relocation of the hospital to a much improved City centre location as part of the ambitious Riverside Sunderland masterplan.
Over the past year, staff at Sunderland Eye Infirmary have been working with architects to develop plans and the trust are now in a position to share these plans publically.
All clinical services will transfer to the new state-of-the-art facility and they are also planning to expand their specialist ophthalmology services in the community, including the introduction of a new clinic at Cleadon Park Primary Care Centre in South Shields.
This is fantastic news not only for our Trust, but for the whole region. Sunderland Eye Infirmary cares for patients from across the North East, Cumbria and beyond and is one of very few specialist standalone eye hospitals in the NHS. It is widely regarded as a centre of excellence for eye services and has an outstanding reputation across the NHS, locally regionally and nationally.
Over the coming weeks a series of virtual engagement sessions will take place with patients, families, carers and the general public to help us shape and refine our plans. They are also working with The Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) to ensure the new hospital design is built around the needs of those with sight impairments.

They would also welcome your help in promoting the online engagement events and also very happy to arrange any bespoke focus groups for patients and carers etc.
